Raise the Age Initiative

Renovation & Expansion  of Industry Residential Center

Town of Rush, New York

MJ oversaw engineering and architecture services to assist OGS and OCFS under this program to raise the age of criminal responsibility in New York. The new Raise the Age law changes the way 16- and 17-year-olds are processed in the criminal and youth justice systems and changes the placement they may receive.

MJ was responsible for the overall management of this extensive effort, which involved the coordination of several consultants. MJ led several design charettes throughout the duration of the project. MJ also provided facility assessments, architecture, structural, and civil design services, as well as permitting, cost estimating, and construction inspection services.

The Industry Residential Center project expanded the facility to serve up to 80 additional youth, bringing its total capacity to 130.

The construction included renovation and expansion of six separate buildings which include; academic buildings, vocational shops, and a full-sized gymnasium and auditorium. The project included extensive security upgrades.

The work was completed under an aggressive eight-week design schedule, with the design team working in close collaboration with OGS to deliver bid documents.
