Redevelopment of Riverfront Park

Troy, New York

MJ provided survey, structural, site/civil and environmental design and landscape architecture services to revamp the city’s aging Hudson River waterfront and redevelop Riverfront Park. The overall goals of the project were to improve the connections between the park and the city’s downtown area, remedy existing design deficiencies, improve landscape aesthetics, and reorient the park to open views of the Hudson River. Key elements of the design included site preparation and grading, planting of trees, shrubs, and perennials, design of a 1,000-seat amphitheater, installation of an interactive water feature and new pedestrian lighting.

MJ performed a traffic study to improve pedestrian and vehicular linkages to Riverfront Park and Troy’s downtown community. This multi-modal study focused on trucks, cars, buses, bicycles, pedestrian and marine transportation systems. MJ also developed options and configurations to enhance parking availability and access, a key element of this project.

Various multi-use pathways were also designed to connect the park to the downtown area. Riverfront Park is home to Troy’s extensive farmers market, summer concerts series, fitness classes, and numerous other festivals and entertainment throughout the year. Linkage and parking improvements increased pedestrian movement in the downtown community, created a more active community environment, promoted tourism, and provided significant economic benefits to the City.
