Reconstruction of Kew Gardens Interchange

MJ was a key member of the design team working closely with Hardesty & Hanover on the reconstruction of the Kew Gardens Interchange. The $300 million, four-phase project involves the replacement of three overpass structures, reconstruction of 15 bridges, new retaining walls and overhead sign structures. The reconstruction of Queens Boulevard includes modifications to MTA Kew Gardens/Briarwood/Van Wyck subway station and a NYPD substation, including the addition of an elevator access.

MJ provided highway design, survey and right-of-way acquisition mapping, and geotechnical mapping. Specific tasks include work zone traffic control, drainage analysis, signing and striping, traffic signal design, pavement design, utility coordination, and cost estimating.

MJ was tasked with the drainage and stormwater design on this massive interchange reconstruction. MJ prepared an existing conditions drainage assessment and hydraulic analysis and was responsible for drainage design and analysis of existing available outlets. MJ modeled existing drainage conditions to assess the effectiveness of the system and modeling post-construction drainage conditions to recommend rehabilitation of existing structures, or installation of new systems.

MJ designed innovative stormwater management systems to comply with NYCDEP and NYSDOT regulations. One example of MJ’s stormwater design was a bioswale, which is a hybrid between a swale and a bioretention facility.
