Purchase College, Water System Improvements

Purchase, New York

MJ was responsible for a campus-wide water study to investigate impacts of a backflow preventer installation on the sole water feed into the campus. MJ developed a computerized hydraulic model to identify deficient areas within the system. The campus water distribution system was modeled using WaterGEMs and consisted of 32,000 LF of water main. The model included hydrants, building connections, and a municipal connection with significant fluctuations in system demands. MJ developed a final report, with associated costs, for the recommended improvements.

Following the water study, MJ led the design of a new water pump station that consisted of four new booster pumps with variable frequency drives, hydropneumatic tank, process piping and valves, dual reduced pressure zone backflow preventers and enclosure, emergency generator, instrumentation and controls, new electrical service, and site improvements. MJ prepared architectural renderings for the pump station during schematic design to ensure consistency in aesthetic appearance with other buildings on campus. MJ also provided bidding and construction phase services.
