Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge

MJ teamed with HDR and was a key member of the design team responsible for this $3.98 billion design/build project to replace the Tappan Zee Bridge. MJ’s scope included transportation design, structural engineering and utility coordination, drainage and stormwater design, Work Zone Traffic Control (WZTC), GIS services and modeling. MJ staff relocated to Westchester County for the duration of the design.

The project included complex WZTC (165,000 AADT) schemes for both Rockland and Westchester sides. MJ revised previously approved WZTC schemes in coordination with the contractor to allow for construction time savings and overall project schedule time savings. MJ was heavily involved in design services during construction and performed reviews on RFIs, submittals and numerous field revision design modifications. MJ was also responsible for the design of a temporary maintenance dock structure located under the existing Tappan Zee Bridge.

As part of the utility design and coordination, MJ was responsible for the temporary and permanent water supply connections on both the Rockland and Westchester County sides of the new bridge for both domestic use and fire protection, as well as gas, electric, sewer, and communication utility design.

MJ provided design for a 3.6-mile bicycle and pedestrian path that extends from the Village of Tarrytown to the Village of South Nyack. The path features six scenic overlooks, interpretive displays and public art across its length. MJ also provided engineering and landscaping services for the welcome center on the Westchester County landing, which included visitor parking, an outdoor pavilion, bike repair station, vehicle charging stations, walkways, public art and landscape architecture, restrooms, and an informational kiosk.
