College for Engineering and Applied Sciences

Albany, New York

MJ is working closely with CSArch on the renovation and adaptive reuse of the former Albany High School. Constructed in 1912, the historic building will become the new College for Engineering and Applied Sciences at the University at Albany’s Downtown Campus. MJ is providing structural engineering and site design.

One of the major design challenges of the project was to develop a phased approach to renovation and occupation of the building, as UAlbany will fill the 127,000-sq. ft. of space over the next several years. MJ’s design includes the reconstruction of the entrance on Washington Avenue, a plaza entrance at the east side of the building, site work around the remaining portions of the building, the construction of a roof penthouse to accommodate mechanical equipment and the renovation of the south side of the building.
