3D laser scanning scanning the bqe |
![]() |
This project involves the scoping phase for the reconsturction of the 1.5 mile section of the BQE in Kings County, which included 21 bridges, and the unique triple cantilever section. MJ's responsibility for the preliminary phase of the design investigations includes high definition laser scanning, general survey, pavement evaluation and utility coordination. The data obtained through laser scanning was used to generate as-built information as well as a complete 3D model of the entire project site encompassing the triple cantilever section and all 21 bridges located within the 1.5-mile section. In order to minimize disruption to the community and the traveling public, MJ utilized two high definition laser scanners during the hours of 10:00 pm to 5:00 am in order to accelerate the data collection while minimizing traffic delays. All of the scan data was collected in 12 nights. Utilizing the laser scanning helped to ensure the safety of the traveling public by minimizing traffic delays and complicated M&PT schemes. Utilizing one lane closure enhanced the safety of the field crews, as they were able to collect the data of the entire site from a safe location. Throughout the scanning process there were no traffic accidents or backups of any kind. |
