MJ crews mobilized quickly to document the damage left by Tropical Storm Irene and remnants from Tropical Storm Lee.
MJ’s surveyors, structural inspectors and 3D laser scanning crews have been working diligently to assess the destruction along New York State Thruway Canals, specifically at Locks 8, 9, and 10. The damage documented by MJ included a hole that was over 1,200 feet long and approximately 40 feet deep in areas.
MJ’s 3D laser scanning team scanned the site immediately after Irene had left the area and scanned the area again immediately after the remnants of Lee passed through. By using 3D laser scanning, MJ crews were able to quickly and accurately document the conditions from a safe location. This allowed MJ to create two separate sets of 3D as-builts of the damaged site.
MJ’s structural inspectors also reacted quickly working long hours and weekends in order to provide structural analysis of the canal locks.

MJ is pleased to announce that the New York State Thruway's Open Road Tolling Project at the Woodbury Toll Plaza recently won Outstanding Project of the Year in Roadway Management by the Intelligent Transportation Society of New York. An environmentally friendly project that will have a tremendous impact on customer service in the northeast United States, this Highway Speed E-ZPass Project involved the demolition of five toll lanes to allow for the construction of four Highway Speed E-ZPass lanes including approach work. The advent of Highway Speed E-ZPass lanes at Woodbury marks the first location on the New York State Thruway to offer both passenger and commercial vehicles the opportunity to pay their toll while driving at Highway Speeds. For the first time, E-ZPass customers, including commercial vehicles, can travel from the Tappan Zee Bridge toll barrier on the Hudson River to the Williamsville toll barrier just east of Buffalo without stopping or slowing down. The project not only improves traffic flow, but also reduces congestion and diminishes green house gas emissions from vehicles that would have otherwise needed to slow down and then accelerate as they passed through the toll plaza. MJ was responsible for performing engineering and surveying tasks for this $65 million project.
